True leaves? and related challenges this week

It has been a couple days shy of three weeks since the first gardyn box arrived and I put the seed cubes in water. While I started getting messages around day 10, and clearly others are ready then, Mine was not ready then,

Went away for a few days and could not hover. I am disappointed in the quality of the kelby pictures. Also it did not always show pictures from the same times on both cameras (skipping times). Additionally some of the pictures were taken in the dark and were worse.

The true leaves were more obvious to me when the leaves were serated. On the rest, I seem to be going for a count greater than two. (Can add all of today's pictures with blogspot on the computer but not on my android phone with blogger.) According to the written documentation it is ok to thin at 2-3". Most were shorter. As it was some were so close as to be hard to tell which leaves came from which stems.

Put 3 teaspoons (as measured by the spoon that came with. Allegedly Gardyn changed thier size and the fertiziler package says by weight.) in a cup of warm water. The water changed to brown but there was a lot left on the bottom. Washed it into the tank with two cups more warm water.  Next time I'll try  1tsp/1C. The wierd thing is when I started kelby said 90% full. Later in the evening it read 80%. After the 8am watering it is back to 90%. Put enough in for a full tank, so I should add more water. 

It is recommended to cover the stone wool to keep algea from growing with the light and fertilizer.
Rather than buy $75 ycovers. I cut rather imprecise bits of brown paper bags. Will keep the cardboard shipping covers in the future and punch holes in them.  I also did not buy the $69 nursery. I used a food left over container for the unsprouted tatsoi, and the cotyledon only sweet peppers and jalapeno.  Gardyn in clearly in this to make money. I had rather hoped I was buying a solution, and am annoyed to keep buying more stuff.  (Anybody need Christmas present ideas? )

Counting down to the tank refresh. Wondering if I can count from Monday, December 13 when the fertilizer was added or whether it needs to be from Friday, November 26 when the water was added.
Guess ordering a ph and parts measuring device is becoming critical.

I now need to manually check the water in the nursery.

Gardyn October refresh

You may remember Garden recommends a monthly refresh to keep things in balance and a deep clean every six months. You may also remember that I chose to actually refresh more ofen at two weeks.  As my time away passed I kept stretching the time out, developing bad habits. I think the only spreadsheet updates I have been logging are the arrived seeds. I've actually been home noshing daily for a while now. None the less I found myself letting the water get low as the 28 day count down expired and so busy I just added more water and fertilizer. Homemade Kefir?

 UNDER CONSTRUCTION Related Background: At age 50 a colonoscopy was recommended. Then eating more fiber was recommended. Missed my year round garden to graze from to support the fiber. That's why this blog has been mosty about my Gardyn for a while.  This summer (2024)  I was treated for diverticulitis with several rounds of antibioutics. For a time I was on special diet . (That's not either of the links I remember.) So now I am in the long slow process of trying to repopulate my gut and reintroduce foods back into my diet. My body notices if I skip a pill or take a different brand with different contents. When I finally got in to see the specialist, he encouraged my approach of taking probiotics, both tablets and the range of fermented foods. the perfect strawberry

The perfect strawberry. I have lots of open spots this week and thought to order more bareroot strawberries,  but they're out until fall. Why are there spots open? Two of my lettuces bolted. Normal aging cycle or too warm? Two of my lettuces died. :( This is a first. Did I let them get too big and then harvest too much? A baby kale also died? Did i expose it to fertilizer too soon? Are they  not getting water? The assistant Kelby has not said a thing other than maybe a camera is blocked and things may burn too close to the light, and the usual water level messages. (I wonder how much the ypods hold.) It seems like a good time to refresh the water and maintain each plant. ... Once the plants were out and I cleaned,  I made sure water was trickling through.
