sweet pepper highs and lows; d'iver bolted ...

Image
This week the sweet pepper is the star with flowers that need pollinating and new fruits popping up. Kelby sent me a notification about removing leaves that do not look healthy. Once again it is a generic message which may or may not have anything to do with anything. Turns out there are a few mint leaves crowded at the base that got removed when I pruned the top off the plant and discovered buds. The thing that has me worried is the spots on the above mentioned sweet pepper leaves. If rubbed, some small crumbes fall off the bottom. So far neither customer support nor the user groups have been helpful. I see reference to edema and using a fan to increase circulation. Already got a fan running. I am not eager to take it up a level as it gets louder. Got a social phone call this morning. My gardyn was asked about, so I had to go over and take a look. again (I ate a cherry tomatoe before taking my car in for maintenance earlier today. I nibbled on a butterhead lettuce after the call....

so much happening

Thinning This picture is a few days old, when these sprouts had only cotyledons:  Red Amarynth ,  butterhead,  buttercrunch, and  breen (forgot to update breen in the spreadsheet).  Replaced:  an empty pod (earlier arugula?),   bolted arugula,  buttercrunch (accidentally left two and the bolted one after the other), and  cilantro (see bolting below). The flashy trout still has not germinated - two more weeks before asking for a credit. I probably should have put the strawberry in too. It is so tiny. I guess the mint was too.  Hmm where to put it? In the future, I should plan time to soak the empty pods in vinegar before putting them back into use. Some had a bit of discoloration even after h202 and a toothbrush. The cubes cleaned up fairly well. Do I want to bake the stonewool to sanitize? Clearly I bought some stonewool cubes. Also my membership seems to be bringing in cubes faster than I am using them. For the cubes I am liking my...

crazy roots on third refresh

Image
Another two weeks or so has passed since the last refresh. Have been adding augmented water every several days. The water was kinda middling with a bit of surface scum and stuff in the water. Pruned tons of roots. Had troubles pulling out the tomato plant. It's root had gone both up and down. Used a toothbrush to attempt to get them out of the system. Looking on facebook, it had big roots last time too. Maybe I need to prune the roots for this thirsty plant more often. I tried to be proactive on root trimming - at least on my last harvest of 2 green mustard, 1 red mustard, and 2 curly kale. The tomato has not produced a harvest yet.  I may be over my hesitation on root trimming. The mint will be prohibited from the bottom and free water. (What was the other plant I thought that about? tatsoi?) The mint had a fine runner with new plants every inch or so. The other, not quite thinned to one , buttercrunch bolted. Not sure why. I took off the collars. Having them on the peppers ...

Lush growth, buttercrunch bolted

Image
Started taking pictures of the lush growth. Not sure how much was just time passing and how much was getting other things to eat from dad's favorite produce market, but for the first time I feel like I need to eat faster.  Decided to take pictures of all 30 plants. At times I want more, but at times just tracking and caring for these seems like plenty. (Parsely and chives replacing non sprouted tatsoi and early dieing monte carlo.) My amaranth has a bunch of red sprouts, but no true leaves. The strawberry has not sprouted yet.  (To replace arugula.) Now I need to start another thing after the fact. Let's try to be proactive: one of each breen, buttercruch, butterhead, and flashy trout. Move amaryth by lights. I am thinking I need to get agressive with harvesting and pruning roots before the next refresh. And here are the stars of the show:   thyme  - my first time from seed. I need to actually try it. (I have tons from a varigated variety outside too. pruned it...
