Second Refresh


x It has been 14 days since the last refresh. Kelby resets to 28 days, but some users advocate doing it more frequently. I'd rather do a bit more work along the way than have to disassemble the whole thing and fight to clean it.  (I forgot to look at joins.)

I have added two gallons of water with 1 measure fertilizer and 20 drops GSE twice since the last refresh. My plants are much thirstier than the two weeks before the last refresh. The plants are bigger. Many more plants had roots going into other sections. This meant putting the ypods in a tub was less efficient this time.  This is were I recall instructions of harvesting the plants.  Sorry, I noshed rather than gathering and taking a picture. I harvest the Swiss chard earlier than I might have otherwise.

Kelby had recently notified about root care. I was glad I had trimmed my tomatoes roots, when I was trying to pollinate. (Sorry reader - that was a brief Facebook post. Today a flower fell off. sniff, sniff). I am thinking maybe harvesting and trimming shortly before the refresh might make the tasks more manageable.

As for the actual refresh, the water had a bit of scum on the service and some stuff (algae?) floating around in it. My first impression is that it moved easily with dilute h202 and brush. After II rinsed the tank, I hit a couple of spots another time, and rerinsed. I feel vindicated in not waiting.

Totally enjoyed my new 1 gallon measuring pitcher. It works well for bailing (with a dish towel to wipe the bottom) and for pouring into the funnel in the lid.

First Deep Clean of Gardyn

Changing processes Somewhere in the early days of owning a Gardyn, I learned maintenance was to include monthly refreshes and a 6 month deep clean.  The refreshes involved taking the lid off to empty the tank. The deep clean involved taking apart the columns now without thier little  help stickers.  Apparently the recommended process has changed. Now refresh every 2 or 4 weeks depending on crops, a light cleaning quarterly, and the deep cleaning as needed. I was aware Gardyn recently started selling hydroboost  ( vs H202 ). I had not started using it weekly. I wonder if there is anything else I missed. Gardyn sends me email on other things. When looking at the light cleaning I wondered about dumping the tank of  water and h202. There was was discussion of the h202 killing the hydroguard and leaving it overnight to avoid that. Plant of the Day? borage, ... peas

For the most part I have used this blog when I have something "big enough" to write about. There have been lots of quick posts to Facebook with the little things: Planting something for the first time (maybe only in this system). Plants germinating, flowering, fruiting, harvestable, recipes...   even there I feel like I am behind by at least two topics. Clearly I got out of the habit of looking at it every morning this summer, but have not resumed it. Got thru the deep clean, and, fingers crossed, everything is working. I am thinking I should give it (gasp) a hard prune (no, not that). Borage This is totally a new plant for me. Like the calendula there are some reports saying it shouldn't be eaten, and yet I have recipes . My doctor said he did not know. At first it produced a fairly long stalk with a cluster of buds that opened over a span of time. Moved to the top to reduce blocking light from other plants   Purple. :) . It is furry or spiky.  Not sure I like ...
