seedlings and kelby, the smart assistant

The first gardyn box showed up Wednesday with most of the system. The lights (and cameras) got delayed until Friday and then Saturday. Not being the most patient person, I started with what I could. I opened the box, read the literature, and got about half way thru the assembly. There were QR codes pointing to very similar information on the web with videos. Additionally I could the poke around other documentation.





 On top of that  I was reading a facebook group. The message I got was that starting seedlings should be done free of fertilizer. If starting up the whole system the tank could be this way, but if not you could additionally buy a nursery for starting seeds. I decided to use a baking pan instead.





Saturday evening I have the whole thing assembled linked to my phone app by wifi. Sunday I get an email from Kelby the assistant tellling me that the cardboard was for shipping and should have been removed.  I noticed that about 1/3 of them have sprouted (2 green mustard, 2 classic kale, tatsoi?,  red sails lettuce, red mustard,  Monte carlo?, 2 arugula, Breen lettuce). Hopefully they will recover. If not apparently gardyn will replace them. According to the help,  YCube refill tips, I determined I set them in water that was too deep. Now I am concerned about algae. ?.

Shortly thereafter I got an email mentioning that I could collect my next 10 ycubes.  Ack. I barely know what I have and now I need to think about crop rotation... and should I have staggered the duplicates in this batch. Now I am trying to remember my organization system for the square foot. Looking at the pictures in the app, I can't  read the writing. I guess the color code belongs in the planned spreadsheet. The sprouts are much more impressive in person than the pictures.

You may remember Garden recommends a monthly refresh to keep things in balance and a deep clean every six months. You may also remember that I chose to actually refresh more ofen at two weeks.  As my time away passed I kept stretching the time out, developing bad habits. Homemade Kefir?

 UNDER CONSTRUCTION Related Background: At age 50 a colonoscopy was recommended. Then eating more fiber was recommended. Missed my year round garden to graze from to support the fiber. That's why this blog has been mosty about my Gardyn for a while.  This summer (2024)  I was treated for diverticulitis with several rounds of antibioutics. For a time I was on special diet . (That's not either of the links I remember.) So now I am in the long slow process of trying to repopulate my gut and reintroduce foods back into my diet. My body notices if I skip a pill or take a different brand with different contents. When I finally got in to see the specialist, he encouraged my approach of taking probiotics, both tablets and the range of fermented foods. the perfect strawberry

The perfect strawberry. I have lots of open spots this week and thought to order more bareroot strawberries,  but they're out until fall. Why are there spots open? Two of my lettuces bolted. Normal aging cycle or too warm? Two of my lettuces died. :( This is a first. Did I let them get too big and then harvest too much? A baby kale also died? Did i expose it to fertilizer too soon? Are they  not getting water? The assistant Kelby has not said a thing other than maybe a camera is blocked and things may burn too close to the light, and the usual water level messages.
